Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters recently completed a fairytale comeback to win the 2009 US Open grand slam event after being out of the professional game for almost two years. In so doing, she cemented her place in the Great Tennis Comebacks hall of fame.
Kim retired from professional tennis in May 2007, shortly before her 24th birthday. Despite playing on the tour for almost ten years, it was almost universally felt that she was too young to retire and was prematurely ending a good career which could have ended up being a great one. Kim's stated reasons for leaving tennis were injuries and a desire to start a family, which she duly did - her daughter Jada was born in February 2008.
So naturally she was received back with open arms when in March 2009 she announced her intention to return. She was granted wildcard entries into tournaments in Cincinnati and Toronto, where she reached the quarter finals and third round respectively - a good enough showing to then be granted a wildcard for the main draw of the US Open which she had won in 2005. In the 2009 tournament she played some solid tennis, defeating both Venus and Serena Williams on her way to the title where she beat Caroline Wozniacki in the final.
When announcing her return to the game, Kim stated that she would evaluate the success of her comeback after the US Open, both in tennis terms and how it works combined with her new family responsibilities. It was surely an unmitigated success on the first count, so let's hope she can find a way to balance her personal commitments so that we can see more of her, because surely this is a player with potential to achieve a lot more in tennis.

Tennis has a long-standing history steeped in tradition. Yet, there are two main events that seemed to set the sport apart from any other in the hearts and minds of those who enjoy watching and playing it.
One was the invention-vulcanized rubber that allowed real tennis to take the lead from lawn tennis - a popular gentleman's sport of the 18th century.
The other was the match between female tennis star Billie Jean King and her male counterpart, Bobby Riggs. Her wondrous victory over Riggs gave female tennis stars the respect they had long sought.
Vulcanized Rubber:
Until vulcanized rubber allowed tennis balls to be made in the 1850's for the outdoor play we enjoy today, most tennis matches were enjoyed on indoor courts. Much like today's racquetball, "real tennis" as it was known uses the angled walls of a real tennis court to strategically hit and return the ball to their opponents.
Tennis as we know it today was first called "lawn tennis," and made its debut among the higher classes in the mid 1800's, as way for courting couples to enjoy a real sport without distressing the ladies.
After Charles Goodyear, of Goodyear tire fame, invented vulcanized rubber, rubber tennis balls were introduced in play instead of the wads of wool, hair, wool, or cork wrapped in leather or string and cloth that had been previously used.
Since these new rubber balls didn't need a wall to bounce off of, the game was quickly taken outside where people could enjoy it in the fresh air and sunshine. New rules were quickly introduced to compensate for changes in the speed and style of the game on these new lawn courts.
Walter Clopton Wingfield is considered the father of modern tennis, or lawn tennis, having patented the game in 1874 with the United States Patent Office, although many claim that others actually introduced the game to the masses, with Wingfield taking formal credit.
It didn't take long for tennis to become a popular hit. Tennis clubs soon opened, followed by the first tennis championships in 1877 at Wimbledon

Unlike playing from the base line, a volley in tennis requires the player to come down near the net. This is a double edged sword - while you can now hit shots cleanly at places that the opponent cannot expect to reach in time, you may face the same situation if your opponent is smart. Hence, playing a volley requires a lot of practice and alertness.

Oversized Tennis Racket - Is it Right For You?
Whether you are a beginning tennis player or an advanced tennis ace, you may have at one time or another, thought about whether you should play with an oversize or mid size tennis racket. I will tell you my experiences and my recommendations on this topic.
First off, most people who play with an over size racket are beginners to average club players. The reasons why many people choose to play with an oversize racket is that it has a generous sized sweet spot, and it has a lot more give than a mid size. The difference in the sweet spot can be the difference between a ball staying in play and a ball being called out. Furthermore, you can get more power generated from an over size racket. This can be very handy for those who cannot generate their own power such as youngsters and the elderly.
Having said this, the disadvantage of an over size racket is that it is difficult to control compared to a mid size. Nearly every pro tennis player that you see playing will have a mid-size racket. They can generate their own power, and they want precise control on where the tennis ball is going.
When I first started out, I played with an over size racket, but as I became better, I switched over to a mid-size. It would be a hard adjustment to switch back to an over size because most of my tennis shots would probably go beyond the court. Try both of them out, and see which one is most comfortable for you!
